24 Hour Care at Home | 6 Coping Mechanisms For Coping When Your Loved One Needs Round-the-Clock Care

Less than a minute read
Is your loved one in need of 24-hour care at home?

When your loved one makes the transition to full-time care, it can take its toll - and it may take some time for you to adjust to the life changes that come with it.

This week, we’re looking at some effective coping mechanisms to help you manage when your loved one starts receiving 24-hour care at home.

Allow Time For Acceptance

It may not be easy to come to terms with the fact that your loved one requires 24-hour care at home. It will likely require some adjustments to your usual routine - so it's important that you seek all the help and support that you can.

You may find that there’s a grieving process for the loss of the life you had together before your loved one needed 24-hour care at home. It’s important to acknowledge each stage and allow yourself to feel the emotions tied to that process.

Seek Support Wherever You Can

It’s important that you find someone to talk to about your feelings and what you’re going through. This could be a friend, family member, therapist, or someone else going through the same situation.

Talking through your feelings may help you to better understand and cope with your emotions, offering you an outlet to relieve your stress and anxiety. This, combined with recommended stress-relieving activities, can help you find a way to navigate through this difficult time.

You can look to relieve your anxieties in more creative ways, too; journaling and/or painting are effective ways of clearing the mind.

Ensure You Have Strong Lines of Communication

Having effective lines of communication with your loved one’s carer, GP or other healthcare professional is important for helping you to feel more at ease with their 24-hour care at home.

Having regular contact will help you to understand what their social and independent activities are, what their care plan and medical care look like, and how they’re coping emotionally, all of which can help put your mind at rest.

You’re Doing the Best By Your Loved One

On days when you may be feeling a little uncertain about your loved one's care plans, try to remember that they’re in capable, expert hands. Receiving 24-hour care at home is, for your loved one, necessary, and it’s been implemented because it’s in their best interests.

It can be easy to let your mind into negative thoughts, so it’s important to remind yourself that you’re doing the very best you can for your loved one.

Focus on the Fun Aspects of Your Relationship

Now that your loved one is receiving 24-hour care at home, you can focus on making sure the time you spend with your loved one is happy, quality time.

With someone else as the primary carer for your loved one, you can spend your time together making happy memories and doing little things to cheer them up, such as baking together or visiting a garden centre.

Try to see this as a positive time, and appreciate the freedom your relationship can now have without the dependency.

Live Your Life

Ultimately, try not to feel guilty for living your life. Your loved one is in safe hands receiving 24-hour care at home, so you can get on with your days without any pressure.

It may feel strange to just ‘carry on’, but your loved one would want you to be happy and do the things you love.

Try and find a hobby where you can socialise and do something you enjoy, such as a book group or craft club.
